For gentle, expert care for your child’s first dental visit, trust a caring Mississauga Dentist to guide you and your family.

Getting ready for your first appointment

Talk to your child about the upcoming visit to the dentist. The main purpose of the first visit is to relax, have some fun, and start building a positive relationship with the dentist. Not knowing what to expect can make children nervous. Here is what your child can expect during their first appointment:

Talk and Listen

We will talk with you and your child, explain what we are going to do and why, and introduce your child to some of the tools we use. We speak in kid friendly language and explain dental terms so your child feels comfortable and reassured. See, we are not so scary after all.

Gently Examine

We will gently examine your child’s gums, tongue, teeth, and overall health. Our exam will find any areas of concern or spots that may need extra attention at home. We will provide you with personalized advice and note any areas to watch during future visits.

Educate

We may ask your child to show us how they brush their teeth and then offer gentle instructions to improve their brushing at home. We are happy to answer any questions you or your child have about dental health.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Children usually begin cutting their first teeth around six months. It is recommended that children visit the dentist by their first birthday or within six months of getting their first tooth. If you suspect any problems or your child is in pain, please book an appointment right away. It is never too late for a first dental visit.

Baby teeth are just as important as adult teeth. They do more than hold space for permanent teeth. Children’s teeth influence how their face looks, how they smile, and how often they smile. Children who develop confidence and smile openly in their early years tend to keep these habits. Even mild dental pain, which children may ignore, can negatively affect how they chew, what foods they prefer, and how much they eat.

Appointment length depends on your child’s needs and cooperation. Typically, visits last about one hour.

After the first visit, your child should see the dentist as often as you do. We recommend check ups and cleanings every six months unless otherwise advised. If your child has tooth or jaw pain, rubs or nurses their jaw a lot, or avoids hard or cold foods, book an appointment sooner.

Your mouth is more than your teeth. It includes teeth, tongue, gums, cheeks, glands, ligaments, joints, bone, and more. When one part of your oral health suffers, your entire mouth is affected. Swollen, itchy, sore, or bleeding gums may be early signs of a serious problem.
